Deze week heb ik drie dagen meegelopen met de post graduate studenten en meegekeken bij de specialisten tijdens hun behandelingen.
Aan het begin van de week heb ik het samenstellen van de behandelplannen en de repetities van de patiënt eindpresentaties bijgewoond van de post graduate studenten. Zij toonden de behandelingen die zij gepland en uitgevoerd hadden bij patiënten met parodontale aandoeningen. Hierbij toonden zij hoe ze de etiologie van de aandoening aanpakten en behandelden met scaling & rootplanen, flapchirurgie en regeneratieve chirurgie. Ook plaatsen zij zelf implantaten.
Later in de week heb ik meegekeken bij de specialistenbehandeling van patiënten. Hierbij heb ik een controle gezien bij een meneer, die niet zo goed zijn mondhygiëne onderhouden had, poetsinstructie kreeg en vervolgens een uitgebreide gebitsreiniging. Verder zag ik een mevrouw die een plaveiselcel carcinoma had en daarvoor in het hoofdhals gebied bestraald was. Zij heeft deze aandoening overleefd maar kampt nu met een droge mond en botradionecrose in de onderkaak. Gezien het in haar situatie erg belangrijk is de dentitie te behouden krijgt ze regelmatig controle.
Later op de dag zag ik een flapoperatie distaal van de 17 waarbij botcorrectie en een hercontourering van de gingiva werden gedaan. Tot slot keek ik mee bij een postgraduate student die een tunnelpreparatie maakte op een 37.
Aan het einde van de week volgde ik samen met de postgraduate studenten college van Prof. L Heijl over de toegepaste bot-en parodontale regeneratie technieken. Daarbij heb ik veel geleerd over de verschillende technieken en het mogelijk te behalen succes met Emdogain bij parodontale regeneratie.
De sfeer op de afdeling parodontologie was erg hartelijk en hoewel het een korte week was heb ik er veel geleerd op het gebied van parodontologie.
Department for periodontology
This week I followed the postgraduate students and I watched the specialists during their treatments.
At the beginning of the week I attended the making of treatment plans and the rehearsal of the finale patient presentation treatments of the postgraduate students. They showed the treatments they had planned and preformed in patients with periodontal disease. Here they showed how they had tackled the etiology of the disease and how they treated the disease with scaling and root planning, flap surgery and regenerative surgery. Also they placed implants themselves.
Later in the week I watched the specialists treating patients. I have seen a recall from a gentleman, who maintained a poor oral hygiene and got an brushing instruction and extensive dental cleaning. Further I saw a lady who had a squamous cell carcinoma and was therefore heavily irradiated in her head / neck region. She survived the cancer but now suffers from a dry mouth and osteoranionecrosis in the mandible. Given the situation it is very important to preserve her dentition. Therefore she well regularly get a recall for a check-up.
Later that day I saw a flap surgery distal to the 17 which included bone correction and recontouring of the gingiva. Finally I watch a tunnel preparation being made on a 37 by a postgraduate student.
At the end of the week I attended, along with the postgraduate students, a lecture of Prof. L. Heijl about the applied bone and periodontal regeneration techniques. During these lectures I learned a lot about the different techniques and the possible achievable success with the use of Emdogain for periodontal regeneration.
The atmosphere at the department of Periodontology was very friendly and although it was a short week, I have learned a lot in the field of periodontics.
