Deze week heb ik meegelopen met de studenten Orthodontie.
Op deze afdeling heb ik veel orthodontische behandelingen gezien, ik heb meegekeken bij behandelplan presentaties en bij behandelingen geassisteerd.
Op de afdeling studeren 15 tandartsen. De studie wordt in het Engels gegeven en de post graduate studenten hebben uiteenlopende nationaliteiten, zoals Zweeds, Grieks, Arabisch en Nederlands.
De orthodontisten in opleiding zijn erg hartelijk en ondanks hun drukke schema namen ze de tijd om mij een beetje in te wijden in de behandelplannen en in de mogelijke en gebruikte technieken.
Veel voorkomend in de kliniek is de behandeling met vaste apparatuur.
Behandeling met vaste apparatuur wordt uitgevoerd met een rechte draad techniek, waarbij standaard metalen draden gebruikt worden, gevormd tot een boogvorm gelijkend aan een tandboog. Het is dan vooral belangrijk dat de juiste brackets gebruikt worden, dat deze op precies de goede plek op de tand geplaatst worden en dat de draad met de juiste boogvorm gebruikt wordt.
Orthodontie fascineert mij zeer en het lijkt me erg boeiend om vaardigheid te ontwikkelen in het buigen van complexe draden. Tijdens het assisteren heb ik ook even een “Australian steel wire” tot een standaard boogvorm mogen buigen. Dit vond ik dan ook erg boeiend werk en het ging tot ieders verbazing goed en vlot.
Binnenkort zijn er lessen in het buigen van draden die ik mag bijwonen. Ik hoop dan inzicht te krijgen in wat de juiste techniek is. Ik verheug me daarop zeer.
Ook was er deze week een seminaar in het Mun-H-Center in Lilla amundön Ågrenska villan. Hier worden patiënten met ernstig complicerende (geestelijke) handicaps tandheelkundig behandeld en het is een van de grootste specialisten centra in Scandinavië. Tijdens het seminaar werden verscheidene aandoeningen besproken en werden de consequenties voor de dentitie zichtbaar. Door een verstoorde krachtenbalans in de mond kunnen de tanden zich namelijk naar ongunstige plaatsen in de mond migreren.
Er werd ook getoond hoe door intensieve behandeling met logopedie de oorzaak van de klachten aangepakt konden worden, waardoor kwaliteit van leven verbeterd wordt en ook hoe zodoende het orthodontische probleem beter op te lossen valt.
De sfeer op de kliniek was uitstekend en ik heb de toekomstige collegae als erg hartelijk ervaren. Hieronder volgen een aantal foto’s om een indruk te geven van de afdeling.

This week I joined the post graduate students in the department of Orthodontics.
In this department I have seen many orthodontic treatments, I watched treatment plan presentations and I assisted with treatments.
In the clinic there are 15 dentists studying. The study is in English and the postgraduate students have different nationalities, like the Swedish, Greek, Arabic and Dutch. The orthodontists in training are very friendly and despite their busy schedules, they took the time to induce me a little bit in the treatment plans and the potential and used techniques.
Common in the clinic is the treatment with fixed appliances. Treatment with fixed appliance is conducted with a straight wire technique, were plain metal wires are used, formed in a way to resemble the shape of the dental arch. In this case it is important that the correct brackets are used, also that the brackets are placed at exactly the right place on the tooth and that the used wire has the right arch shape.
Orthodontics fascinates me very much and it seems very interesting to me to develop skills in the complex bending of wires. While assisting I was allowed to bend a standard arch shape in an "Australian steel wire”. I found this very interesting work and it went well and smoothly to everyone's surprise.
Soon there will be lessons that I can attend in the bending of wires. I hope to understand what is the proper technique in bending. I look forward to it with a lot of enthusiasm.
This week there also was a seminar in the Mun-H-Center in Lilla amundön Ågrenska villan. Here patients with serious complicating (mental) disabilities are treated dentally. This centre is one of the largest specialist centers of Scandinavia. During the seminar, several diseases were discussed and the consequences were shown for the dentition. Because of a disrupted balance of forces in the mouth, the teeth are able to migrate to an improper position. It was also shown in what way, through intensive logopedic therapy, the cause of many symptoms could be addressed, thus enhancing the quality of life and also allowing the orthodontic problem to be treated more successfully.
The atmosphere in the clinic was excellent and I experienced my future colleagues as very warm.
